Introduction

Everything you wanted to know about Rooibos, our blends, ordering from VILBO and becoming part of the VILBO community.

Section 1 — Understanding Rooibos

Is Rooibos actually a tea?

Although it's commonly prepared and enjoyed like tea, Rooibos is not a traditional tea. It comes from a South African shrub called Aspalathus linearis, whereas green, black and oolong teas all come from the tea plant, Camellia sinensis. That botanical difference is one of the reasons Rooibos has its own distinctive character.

Where does Rooibos come from?

Rooibos grows naturally in the Cederberg region of South Africa, where it has been enjoyed for generations. The unique climate and growing conditions of this region make it the natural home of Rooibos.

Why doesn't Rooibos contain caffeine?

Unlike traditional tea, Rooibos naturally contains no caffeine because it comes from an entirely different plant. Nothing is removed during processing—it simply grows that way.

Why does Rooibos taste different?

Although prepared like tea, Rooibos comes from Aspalathus linearis rather than Camellia sinensis. Its naturally smooth, slightly sweet character gives it a flavour unlike traditional tea.

Why is Rooibos naturally smooth?

One reason is its naturally low tannin content. Lower tannin levels contribute to Rooibos' rounded flavour and gentler finish compared with many traditional teas.

Can I enjoy Rooibos every day?

Because Rooibos is naturally caffeine-free, many people enjoy it as part of their everyday routine, whether in the morning, afternoon or evening.

Does Rooibos contain antioxidants?

Yes. Rooibos naturally contains antioxidants, which are naturally occurring plant compounds found in many fruits, vegetables and herbs.

Section 2— Looking a Little Deeper

What areantioxidants?

Antioxidants are naturally occurring compounds found in many plants. In our bodies, normal metabolism and everyday environmental factors can produce unstable molecules called free radicals. In excess, free radicals can contribute to oxidative
stress, which may damage cells over time. Antioxidants help neutralise these free radicals, supporting the body's natural defence against oxidative stress.
Rooibos naturally contains antioxidants, making them one of the characteristics
that distinguish it from many everyday beverages.

Why are tannins important?

Tannins are naturally occurring plant compounds that help protect plants from insects, grazing animals and environmental stress. In tea, they contribute to the dry, slightly astringent sensation that many people associate with stronger brews. Rooibos is naturally low in tannins, which
contributes to its smooth, rounded character and gentle finish.

Why does caffeine matter?

Caffeine affects everyone differently. Some people enjoy it for alertness, while others prefer to reduce their intake later in the day.
Because Rooibos is naturally caffeine-free, many people enjoy it comfortably from morning through evening as part of their daily routine.

Why is Rooibos naturally sweet?

Rooibos has its own naturally smooth, rounded flavour with subtle naturally sweet notes. No sugar or sweeteners are added to create this character.

Why is Rooibos prepared like tea if it isn't actually tea?

Although Rooibos isn't a traditional tea, it is prepared by steeping the leaves in hot water in much the same way. This is why it's often
enjoyed alongside teas while remaining botanically distinct.

Section 3 — Brewing & Enjoying Rooibos

How should Rooibos be brewed?

Place one pyramid infusion bag in a cup and add freshly boiled water. Allow it to steep for 5–7 minutes before enjoying. Rooibos can be served plain, with milk, or chilled over ice depending on the blend and your preference.

Can Rooibos be enjoyed with milk?

Yes. Rooibos Ginger pairs beautifully with milk, while Rooibos Lemongrass is equally enjoyable on its own or served over ice.

Can Rooibos be enjoyed cold?

Yes.
Both blends can be enjoyed chilled. Simply prepare the infusion as usual, allow it to cool, then pour over ice.

Can I add honey or sugar?

Certainly. Rooibos has naturally smooth, slightly sweet notes, so many people enjoy it without sweeteners, but you can personalise it however you like.

How does Rooibos fit into daily hydration?

Rooibos is enjoyed simply as a water-based infusion. Because it is naturally caffeine-free, many people include it throughout the day as part of their normal hydration routine, whether served hot or cold.

Section 4 — About VILBO

Why did VILBO choose Rooibos?

We discovered Rooibos and wondered why so few people in India had heard of it. VILBO was created to introduce this remarkable South African herb through blends that feel familiar, approachable and easy to enjoy.

Where does VILBO source its Rooibos?

Our Rooibos is imported from South Africa, where the plant grows naturally, before being thoughtfully crafted into blends for India.

Why does VILBO offer only two blends?

We believe in introducing Rooibos thoughtfully. Our initial blends—Rooibos Ginger and Rooibos Lemongrass—were created to offer two distinct flavour experiences while letting the character of Rooibos remain at the heart of every cup.

Are the infusion bags individually sealed?

Yes. Every pyramid infusion bag is individually wrapped to help preserve freshness and aroma until you're ready to brew.

Why are pyramid infusion bags used?

The plant-based pyramid shape gives the Rooibos and botanicals more room to expand during brewing, allowing for better infusion and flavour extraction.
